The Happiness of the Katakuris

"Love. Music. Horror. Volcanos. Cinema was never meant to be like this!"

Director: Takashi Miike

Writer: Ai Kennedy & Kikumi Yamagishi

How do I even begin to sell this movie? Random stop motion segments. Campy musical numbers. Guilt-induced zombie hallucinations. Whatever you could possibly imagine and more is in The Happiness of the Katakuris. Don't expect anything too intellectual or high-brow. This movie is all fun and guts, with a few sprinkles of family wholesomeness strewn throughout. (well, if you consider hiding a murder to be wholesome) Probably wouldn't recommend to a baby horror fan, but if you're in the mood to lose your mind, this is the film for you.

Prey

"His savage hunger makes us all...alien prey."

Director: Norman J. Warren

Writer: Max Cuff & Quinn Donoghue

If this film doesn't get Re-Animator levels of cult fame soon I'm gonna start mauling people. Literally the blueprint for problematic queers everywhere. A codependent lesbian couple take in a mysterious stranger, only for him to be a furry alien shapeshifter. Of course, the only logical course of action is to help him crossdress. A love letter to mean genderfluid lesbians everywhere, and where else could you get that?

May

"Be careful...she just might take your heart."

Director: Lucky McKee

Writer: Lucky McKee

(note: not too sure about the safety of the linked site, but it seemed fine with uBlock Origin on. click at your own discretion) Autism Speaks wishes it had the real representation May has. In all seriousness, this film really captures loneliness in an allistic world like none other. Really, it was damned by the marketing, which kinda frames May as this girlboss slasher, which I guess she kind of becomes at the end. But really, May isn't a monster. If anything, she's the most human out of anyone, and the fact she turns to violence is a tragedy. I know so many people like May. I'm like May. Honestly deserves way more respect as a genuine piece of film art than it gets.

Wendell & Wild

Director: Henry Selick

Writer: Henry Selick, Jordan Peele, & Clay McLeod Chapman

Trailer here.

On Netflix.

Unironically, show this to your kids. This film definitely isn't perfect, but it is the perfect film for indoctrinating a new generation of twelve year olds into the edge. Takes me back to watching and rewatching Coraline and Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, and that's the best compliment I could give to any film. If none of this is selling you, at least watch it for the banger soundtrack and animation. You won't be dissapointed.

Battle Royale

"Could you kill your best friend?"

Director: Kinji Fukasaku

Writer: Koushun Takami & Kenta Fukasaku

Watch here

Really a bummer that Battle Royale only gets brought up as "that one movie Hunger Games stole its ideas from," cause it really does a disservice to both. Really, don't go into this ready to draw comparisons. This movie has a lot to offer on its own, and there's a reason it's held so highly. Death to capitalism. Praise to camp.

Splatter: Naked Blood

Director: Hisayasu Satô

Writer: Taketoshi Watari

A surprisingly abstract and introspective film and I am being completely serious about that. Wouldn't recommnend watching while eating something, as it made me a bit queasy and I've seen other people say worse. It earns its name, especially with how horrendous the sounds can be. Also, if you're an old tech enjoyer like myself, you're really gonna have some fun with this one. Top notch computers and tvs in this one, just a gift to the eyes. (which is good, cause the gore scenes can only be described as an attack on the eyes. it balances out)

Frankenhooker

"A terrifying tale of sluts and bolts."

Director: Frank Henenlotter

Writer: Robert Martin & Frank Henenlotter

Look I've got no moral excuse for this. It's Frankenhooker. You either vibe with it or you don't. Trans rights.
